Elea

Elea refers to an Ancient Greek settlement in what is now Italy. It is believed that Elea was founded in about 545BC when Greeks from Ionia fled the Persians.

The Eleatic School includes Xenophanes, Parminides and Zeno of Elea. This school rejected the cosmology of the Pythagoreans and the off shoots of the Pythagoreans, such as the Atomists who believed matter was composed of tiny things called atoms.

To the school of Zeno, the elemental matter was a mysterious thing called "The One." Zeno of Elea developed a clever system of argumentation that showed that all of the arguments of the Pythagoreans led to one paradox or another.

The works of the School of Elea are lost to history. Aristotle refered to Zeno's system of argumentation as dialectics..
