Wikipedia reports that Thales of Miletus (Θαλῆς ὁ Μιλήσιος) lived from circa 624 BC to 546 BC. Thales is often revered as one of the first natural philosophers (scientist) and mathematician. That is he is attributed with attempting natural explanations opposed to mythological or supernatural explanations of events.
Thales is claimed to have predicted an ecclipse.
Thales is believed to have been born in the ancient city of Miletus which is located in present day Turkey (He is part of the Ionian tradition). It is possible that Thales was of Phoenician descent.
