David Joel Horowitz (1939-present) is an interesting character. He was raised in a Marxist community and was a radical writer in the 1960s. Horowitz was part of a group that infiltrated Ramparts magazine and changed its character. He had also worked to encourage radicalism on campus.
In mid career, Horowitz decided that radicalism was not leading people in a positive direction and has since become a vocal voice against use of radical tactics.
Horowitz is interesting to read as he has been on both side of the great political divide that current has everyone at eachother's throat.
In recent years, David Horowitz has been a champion of academic freedom. Horowitz started a group called Students for Academic Freedom and has written several books against professors who use the classroom as a platform for leftwing indoctrination.
Horowitz advocates using the term "Islamofascism" to describe radical Islam. I think that using a term from western history to highlight the fact Western world recently suffered a similar form of radicalization as the Middle East suffers today can help make the separation of Islam from the radicalized form of Islam.
The left is livid with the use of the term.
