Housing Markets

This theme style article has links to articles about the housing and mortgage crisis.

Once again the American Economy is suffering a downturn caused by a crisis in the housing industry. As I see it, the three biggest problems with the housing market in 2008 are:

The third biggest problem is that houses are way overpriced. People are having to take on absurd debt positions to move into a home.

The second biggest problem is that housing prices are dropping. People who took on absurd loans to buy a home have negative equity in their house. Notice that the second problem is solving the first.

The biggest problem is that politicians keep mucking with the mortgage industry. This "crony-capitalism" keeps throwing our economy into boom and bust cycles.

  • Doing Unto Health Care (added 2008-09-08 by Kevin Delaney) This article laments about the comical Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac programs that created the current housing crisis, then ends with a lament that this is essentially the structure that the political class wants to use for Health Care.
  • Shared Ownership (added 2008-09-08 by kd) I contend that a system of shared ownership of housing would be more equitable and would do more to build communities than this current system of mortgages.
  • Mortgages and Housing (added 2008-09-16 by kd) A blog post questions the wisdom of financing housing with mortgages as the two financial instruments reside in logically different spaces.
